My Master, my Slave.

My fear wards over me, threatening me with a lifetime of regrets and unhappiness if I do not live in my dreams--which is to say, even in pursuit of them. This life is my slave till it takes from me all it gives.

"Bad! Bad! What? Is he not going - backwards?' - Yes! But you ill understand him if you complain about it. He goes backwards as everyone goes backwards who wants to take a big jump"

Like I always do

It was supposed to be a love song, but ended up being something I wrote literally 10 minutes before we unexpectedly split for the first time. As the next two months dragged us through the mud, this song was never able to be given as was intended, since the way it was intended to be received had been wholly changed. Luckily, I generally write songs intending universality and retain their inspiration esoterically.

This song, along with my whole new album, now serve as the wind of old Ghosts fluting their way through the canals of this record in time; singing to me as sirens sing to seafarers; always seducing me to shipwreck my spirit on jagged memory or learn to ride the waves.

I did not listen to this song for about six, almost seven months, and I've forgotten entirely how to play it though I will quickly learn; however, a newly mastered album deserves a whole listen, and I've fallen back in love with this song all over again.

Within two months, should you wish, you will be able to own the emotion this song conveys, along with eight other songs from a record of time which was once called, "My Mind in Sound" and evolved to now, more appropriately, be titled as, "Last Year's Ghosts".

Listen to the brittle raspiness of one of last year's Ghosts singing like only ghosts can at the blue link embedded in the following song's title atop it's lyrics.

I hope you enjoy this song even half as much as I do, thank you for staying in touch on here - and now....

Take that gun from off your lips & ask me to dance/ use the spiders in your veins, crawl up & take a chance/ oh I know the old clock is ticking at our graves but I swear if you just hold me I'll keep you safe// and what will I do when death comes to take me from you? I'll run like I always do right back to you// Take that fire in your mind to keep us warm/ use the poison in your smile, you know it's such a charm/ and I know all your fears but I swear if you reach out I'll be right here// and what will I do when death comes to take me from you? I'll run like I always do right back to you - and lady of mine, where's that fear been leading you? Here's all I am, go on & take it all with you// Take that valley in your frown that holds my whole world, fill it with an ocean & I'll fill it with pearls/ and I know it feels like the sun won't rise again but I swear if you just kiss me this will all end/ lady of mine where's that fear been leading you? Here's all I am, go on & take it all with you// and what will I do when death comes to take me from you? I'll run like I always do right back to you/ Like I always do, right back to you/ like I always do, back to you

What up Ya'll!

Hello! I have missed you my friends. Shall write more soon.
Check this cools shit out in the interim.

I have just been singing the hell out of the song "Five to One" over the last week or week and a half. Standing smoking I'm banging my feet on the ground, last night I was walking in step with the beat (dragging my boot for the double beat) while singing it. I have no idea why! Must be something magical about the song - that sounds most scientific and sound.

I also learned it so I can perform it. Its a) super easy, and b) there really is something about the song because something takes me over when I sing it...maybe my beard is channelling the Ghost of Jimmy M.

Most of the lyrics to this song, the rhythmic drone, just the whole thing man! And I love how you can see that 'spirit' in Joshua James - though that young man has it regardless.

He was raised a Mormon and had to hide his records from his parents because they would smash them (literally). His dad always said, "Unless you want to dig ditches, you gotta get an education." -
Well Joshua left college three years ago and just now days his dad is starting to come around because he was very worried that his son wouldn't be able to support his wife and home. Really cool. I have been sort of transfixed by a few songs, but haven't given the whole album I bought (support his family!) enough of a listen. And also I bought his first one I think, I don't really know, I just love what I've heard so far - and especially this song, and probably most importantly because he reminds me of me in some ways. On the radio he said something like, "You have to give it everything you can and make it as authentic as possible; you have to believe and feel what you're singing because you only really get one chance with that audience - and I think if you're doing something authentic people connect with that." - a bit of a paraphrase. But that's how I feel about performing music, so of course I'm going to like him! However his music stands good by itself too.

Talk to you later man,

el Karan

Passion Pit

I dig this song. I listened to it a few times today and checked out the video a second ago. I was concerned the video would ruin the song, and though it gave me a bit of an eye strain (maybe not the videos fault?) it totally kept the spirit of the song in check. phew. crisis averted.

Enjoy!

The Jezebel of Jazz: Thanks for the boogie ride

Anita O'day was born October 18, 1919 in Chicago. She left home at 14 and became a contestant in walk-a-thons as a dancer - touring that circuit for two years and occasionally being called on to sing. Eventually she would work with a ton of different huge Jazz names like Gene Krupa and Benny Goodman - but I've not met many people that know of her.

Anita had a long term problem with heroin and alcohol addiction which led to frequent erratic behavior earning her the nickname "The Jezebel of Jazz" - I don't like that that much because I like her a lot and she almost died of it in 1968 - she rid herself of that habit and began making a come back in 1970.
She maintained that the accidental excision of her uvula during a childhood tonsillectomy left her incapable of vibrato and unable to maintain long phrases; so as necessity being the mother of invention - she said she was forced to develop a more percussive style based on short notes and a rhythmic drive.

Her real name was Anita Belle Colton; she changed her surname from Colton to O'Day because O'Day was pig Latin for "dough" or money and that's why she wanted to be a singer; authentically no-nonsense and direct no matter how she may have been perceived for it - and frankly I really question if the concern of perception for it even entered her mind - who knows? She wanted to sing for money - so that's what she did.

In case you haven't picked up on it - I think she's cool; ha! And maybe because I was so floored when I heard how overtly simple the lyrics she was singing on the radio the other day (a recording from 1942 with Krupa posted in the video below) were; or that her album with Gene Krupa and his big band orchestra played all day Christmas eve and Christmas day for me. She dances all fun and looks like she's having a great time, seems glamorous but accessible- almost kind of weird (which I love)- and she uses her voice in really interesting ways. Plus, she's like the underdog in my eyes because nobody seems to have any idea who she is and it makes no sense to me why she wasn't better known.

So here's to the unsung American lady Jazz singer - Anita O'day.

Thanks for the boogie ride Anita, it really was great.

Oh you know I'm Yours

I used to question bringing children in this world and a priest told me through a friend that if we allow that to instruct our actions, that evil's already won.

Let me add to that perfect refutation with the following video.

All I am

Take that gun from off your lips and ask me to dance
Use those spiders in your veins; crawl up and take a chance
Oh I know the old clock is ticking at our graves
But I swear if you just hold me, I'll keep you safe.

And what will I do? When death comes to take me from you?
I'll run - like I always do, right back to you.

Take that fire in your mind to keep us warm
Use the poison in your smile, oh you know it's such a charm
And I know all your fear,
But I swear if you reach out, I'll be right here

And what will I do? When death comes to take me from you?
I'll run - like I always do, right back to you.

And lady of mine, where's that fear been leading you?
Here's all I am, go on and take it all with you.

Take that valley in your frown that holds my whole world
Fill it with an ocean, and I'll fill it with pearls
And I know it feels like the sun won't rise again
But I swear if you just kiss me, this will all end.

And lady of mine, where's that fear been leading you?
Here's all I am, go on and take it all with you.

And what will I do? When death comes to take me from you?
I'll run - like I always do, right back to you.
Like I always do, right back to you.
Like I always do, right back to you.
Like I always do, back to you.

War, and the Sycophant

Come sweet breakers of the day/ come and take my light and stay/ in their place but gone astray/ a busy man and his wife crying.

Evening strikes and the muscles grow/ the mind the heart and that broken soul/ the past is a jealous ghost/ but she can’t live without us trying.

The heart that shines/ with flames and thorns/ keeps me safe, blowing smoky horns/ the only child that I’ve seen before is the Christ, who comes before my dying.

Reminisce, idolize that whore/ wood creeks on a bloody floor/ a man rises like a shadow at your door/ and your Lovers here, to find you hiding.

Midnight asks of love what for?/ tells me to keep watch by the shore/ the shower runs and the warrior roars/ a new father will keep his swords a' flying.

Twilight sparks for the sycophant/ a calculated masters chant/ the army rides those who can’t/ while those who won’t, sit suited deciding.

Come sweet breakers of the day/ come and take my light and stay/ in their place but gone astray/ it's a busy man and his wife crying.
